SYNOPSIS

Dogfight is a musical adapted from the 1991 Warner Brothers film of the same name starring River Phoenix and Lili Taylor. Dogfight has music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman, La La Land) and a book by Peter Duchan. The 2012 off-Broadway debut was directed by Joe Mantello and starred Derek Klena as Eddie and Lindsay Mendez as Rose.

This hauntingly beautiful musical was praised by countless critics and nominated for numerous awards and won the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical. Dogfight takes audiences on a romantic and heartbreaking theatrical journey that stays with you long after the performance.

It's November 21, 1963. On the eve of their deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia, three young Marines set out for one final boys' night of debauchery, partying and maybe a little trouble. But when Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion.

CHARACTERS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • You must be 16 years or older at the time of audition.

  • We intend to expand the original cast size of 11, depending on the outcome of the auditions.

  • All of the named parts are listed above. Some actors will likely be multicast.

  • All actors will be expected to sing in ensemble songs regardless of their casting (except for some leads in certain instances). The female ensemble will additionally sing in more songs than indicated by the sheet music.

  • All actors will be expected to be comfortable with choreographed movement. This is not a ‘dance’ show, however, and the level of choreography will be adjusted to match the capabilities of the cast. There will be no 'dance' audition.

  • The six marines will be taught short military drills and should be comfortable learning these.

  • Dogfight is set in the USA, so please be prepared to work with an accent coach. Note that not all characters have the same accent, despite the show being set in San Francisco. You are welcome to try an accent during your audition, but it is not required or expected.

  • You should familiarise yourself with the audition material - songs and scenes - but are NOT required to learn them by heart. You are welcome to keep your script/sheet music in hand while auditioning.

All auditionees should read the Dogfight Audition Pack before auditioning

A full copy of the perusal script is available at thezest.ch/dogfight-perusal

Please download the audition materials for all characters you wish to audition for. You may not be required to audition for all of them, but please familiarise yourself with the material (you do not need to learn it by heart). Each song has a downloadable backing track that you can use to practice. The same backing track will be used in your audition. The audition panel will provide a speaker system and play the backing track for you.
